{"id":347,"date":"2013-05-12T12:56:28","date_gmt":"2013-05-12T12:56:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.teacherdiane.com\/?p=347"},"modified":"2013-05-12T12:57:13","modified_gmt":"2013-05-12T12:57:13","slug":"why-is-english-so-confusing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blog.teacherdiane.com\/?p=347","title":{"rendered":"Why is English so confusing?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 align=\"Center\"><\/h1>\n<p>There is no egg in the eggplant,<br \/>\nNo ham in the hamburger<br \/>\nAnd neither pine nor apple in the pineapple.<br \/>\nEnglish muffins were not invented in England,<br \/>\nFrench fries were not invented in France.<\/p>\n<p>We sometimes take English for granted, but if we examine its paradoxes we find that:<br \/>\nQuicksand takes you down slowly,<br \/>\nBoxing rings are square,<br \/>\nAnd a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.<\/p>\n<p>If writers write, how come fingers don&#8217;t fing?<br \/>\nIf the plural of tooth is teeth,<br \/>\nShouldn&#8217;t the plural of phone booth be phone beeth?<br \/>\nIf the teacher taught,<br \/>\nWhy hasn&#8217;t the preacher praught?<\/p>\n<p>If a vegetarian eats vegetables,<br \/>\nWhat the heck does a humanitarian eat?<br \/>\nWhy do people recite at a play,<br \/>\nYet play at a recital?<br \/>\nPark on driveways and<br \/>\nDrive on parkways?<br \/>\nHow can the weather be as hot as hell on one day,<br \/>\nAnd as cold as hell on another?<\/p>\n<p>You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language where a house can burn up as it burns down,<br \/>\nAnd in which you fill in a form<br \/>\nBy filling it out<br \/>\nAnd a bell is only heard once it goes!<\/p>\n<p>English was invented by people, not computers,<br \/>\nAnd it reflects the creativity of the human race<br \/>\n(Which of course isn&#8217;t a race at all.)<\/p>\n<p>That is why:<br \/>\nWhen the stars are out they are visible,<br \/>\nBut when the lights are out they are invisible.<br \/>\nAnd why it is that when I wind up my watch<br \/>\nIt starts,<br \/>\nBut when I wind up this poem<br \/>\nIt ends.<\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/www.c4vct.com\/kym\/humor\/esl.htm<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There is no egg in the eggplant, No ham in the hamburger And neither pine nor apple in the pineapple.
